LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -
A wall of dust and high wind swept across the South Plains Monday night, felling trees, disrupting power lines and starting wildfires.
Some Lubbock households were still without power as LP&L linemen concentrated their efforts on lines that need significant repair. LP&L reports that 40 linemen were out working Monday night and they hope to have all service restored by Tuesday morning.
City of Lubbock street crews placed barricades around town, blocking areas where power lines were down and posed a danger to motorists. These areas include:
2300 Broadway Avenue
1100 Main Street
Idalou Road and E. Erskine
4913 48th Street
42nd Street & Avenue A
E. 10th Street & Vanda
Ave K between 13th-14th Streets
Lubbock police report that all traffic signals affected by the storm are now operational.
High winds snapped power lines and ignited wildfires in Garza County. County officials report that as of 10 p.m. all fires are under control and U.S. 84 is now open to traffic.
Winds caused roof damage across the South Plains and damaged aircraft at Chaparral Airport, lifting one fire station training aircraft completely off its front wheels, pointing its nose toward the sky while it was still on the ground.
The City of Lubbock activated its Emergency Operations Center and issued a warning across the city, advising travelers to avoid driving unless it was absolutely necessary.
The National Weather Service reported winds up to 74 mph during the storm.
