Louisiana fugitive captured in Pike County

PIKE COUNTY, MS (WLBT) -

A two week manhunt for a Louisiana fugitive ended in the woods in Pike county Wednesday.

The multi-agency two state search apprehended Kaunda Magee near Osyka in the Progress Community.

Sixty seven year old Richard Montet came face to face with 36 year old Kuanda Magee after he was found hiding behind his Osyka-Progress Road property.

"I was just wondering if he was going to shoot or not but he was in shock really I think," said Montet.

The Pike county homeowner said he was walking toward a camper behind his house with a state trooper when he noticed something wrong.

"Then I heard a noise, and I said that noise is not supposed to be. So he was ready when he went in and the guy wouldn't drop the gun. He told him to drop the gun. He wouldn't drop the gun, and he started shooting. The guy came out the back window, of course he was bloody when he came out. Looked me straight in the eye, still had the gun," added Montet.

The 40 year land owner said when Magee turned and ran, his neighbor fired the shots that finally stopped the wanted man.

Pike County Sheriff Mark Shepherd credited law enforcement agencies from Mississippi and Louisiana for assisting with the capture.

"He's been hiding in the woods and so forth for about 13 nights and 13 days. The community is  safe again. He's not out here. People don't have to be so vigilant and watching every move they make," said Shepherd.

The Franklinton Louisiana man is charged with crimes that started on October third in Washington Parish Louisiana with a home invasion, kidnapping and rape.

Investigators said he faces attempted murder charges for exchanging gunfire with a police officer before fleeing to nearby Tangipahoa Parish.

According to authorities, Magee was spotted early Tuesday morning after stealing a vehicle, crashing it and fleeing again into the woods in Pike county.

The wanted man was tracked by dogs during his 13 days on the run.

"He did commit a number of burglaries to either get into a home that was unoccupied or structure, maybe change clothes, maybe tried to find a bite to eat and that kind of thing before he would surface again," said Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards.

Law officers said the fugitive served time in the Louisiana Department of Corrections and was on parole when his crime spree began.

His capture is good news for Montet's neighbors.

"I just heard about it, and I was coming down to check on our neighbor because we come down here to fish on his pond back there," said Osyka-Progress Road resident Deborah Simmons who visited with Montet while law officers continued to scour his property.

Magee was transported to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb where he was treated for gunshot wounds to the arm, shoulder, chest and leg.

Investigators said his injuries are not life threatening.
