ESCATAWPA, MS (WLOX) -
A Gautier man is fighting for his life after authorities say he was shot by his father. The incident happened Monday afternoon on Knowlcrest Drive in Escatawpa.
Residents on Knowlcrest Drive stood behind the yellow crime tape in disbelief. Other folks on the street watched police and wondered what could have led a father allegedly pulling a gun on his son.
"I said Lord, what happened. I am sad that it happened," neighbor Bonnie King said.
According to Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd, Willie McCann and his son Willie McCann Jr. got into a heated argument inside the dad's home.
"It was a domestic dispute between a father and son," Byrd said.
Byrd said deputies are still investigating why the father and son were even arguing. But he knows the dispute turned physical quickly and ended in gunfire.
"He was shot in the stomach with a 12 gauge shotgun and at this time the weapon has been recovered," said the sheriff.
Byrd said Willie Sr. is now behind bars in the Jackson County Jail and charged with aggravated assault and possession of a fire arm by a convicted felon. His son is in Singing River Hospital in critical condition.
"We are not sure if he is going to make it or not," Byrd said late Monday afternoon.
Sheriff Byrd said McCann Sr.'s charges could be upgraded if his son dies. His bond is set at $35,000.
