VIENNA (RNN) - Doctors treating pop singer George Michael say he is showing signs of improvement after being admitted last week to a Vienna hospital for treatment of pneumonia.
A statement on the singer's website by Gottfried Locker and Christoph Zielinski, identified as "professors," says Michael is not being treated for any other condition.
"There are no other health issues with regards to the patient other than the underlying pneumatic disorder, and no further measures had to be taken," the statement says.
A series of European concerts were canceled as a result of Michael's illness. The singer's websites says the performances have been postponed, although no replacement dates have been announced.
Doctors have said complete "peace and quiet" are required for his recovery.
News of Michael's improvement must have come as a blow to one religious organization, Christians for a Moral America, which took to Twitter on Saturday to urge followers to pray for his demise.
"He has chosen a satanic lifestyle and must meet an appropriate end," the group wrote.
In follow-up tweets, @GodsWordIsLaw claimed Michael was HIV-positive, and blamed his "lifestyle" for his illness.
Michael was "outed" as gay in 1998 when he was arrested for soliciting sex in a public restroom. Rumors had persisted for years that he was gay, but Michael said in several interviews that he refused to admit his homosexuality out of concerns for his mother.
The Grammy Award-winning singer was half the pop duo WHAM! in the 1980s and went on to have a successful solo career.
Michael also is a well-known HIV and gay rights advocate. One of his most famous performances was a cover of "Somebody to Love" at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness.
Thursday is World AIDS Day.
