MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - One suspect is dead, another
is hospitalized and a third is on the loose after a Memphis police officer opened
fire Friday morning.
The Memphis Police Department
hasn't released the identities of the two people shot.
However, they do say both
were wanted for a nearby break-in when they tried to mow down two police
officers.
Residents of the
Gardenwood Apartment Complex woke up to a massive crime scene.
Just before 8 a.m. police received a call about a break-in
that was in progress at the Jennifer Meadows apartment complex.
The property manager followed the prowlers across the
street to Gardenwood and led police to the right spot.
"Officers pulled
up, pulled on the scene and saw the suspects taking items from one vehicle and
placing them into another vehicle," said Karen Rudolph, of the Memphis Police
Department. "When the officers got out of the car, two of the suspects jumped
into one car and attempted to run over the officers and that's when shots were
fired."
Only one cop pulled the
trigger. Investigators did not say how many shots the officer fired, but both
the driver and passenger were shot.
Their purple Nissan
rolled, flipped and crashed.
An investigation will
eventually determine if this shooting was justified...
The officers were not
hurt.
Police say a third suspect
in the break-in got away in a white car, but they do not know the make or model.
