BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Biloxi firefighters had to rescue two children from their burning home Tuesday after police say their mother left them home alone. The fire happened around noon at a home on Desoto Street, off of Porter Avenue.

When authorities arrived, they found that one of the people who lived there had jumped out of a window to escape the fire. That person was treated for cuts sustained during the escape. Then they realized two kids were trapped inside the home.

"First crews on scene went in the front door and started knocking the fire down," Fire Chief David Roberts said. "Then it became apparent that there were two children still in the house. Another crew went in through a window in the back, and just, fortunately, found the kids rather quickly and brought them out. They weren't breathing on their own when they came out. And before the ambulance came, they were breathing on their own."

Both of the children were resuscitated and taken to the hospital. They're now listed in good condition.

"I hope they'll be just fine now," Chief Roberts said. "It's a good day. Looks like we saved two kids."

Further investigation led to the arrest of the mother, 27-year-old Brenda Maria Salas-Aguliar. Officials believe she left her children unattended while she went out shopping. She now faces two charges of Felony Child Neglect, and is being held at the Harrison County Adult Detention Center.

Police said the home was a multi-family dwelling set up like make-shift apartments, and that several families were living in the house. Biloxi firefighters were able to put out the blaze quickly.
