The NFL Franchise Tag period begins this week. The New Orleans Saints have three potential players that could be tagged. Quarterback Drew Brees leads the list followed by Wide Receiver Marques Colston and Offensive Lineman Carl Nicks. The WAFB Sports team has selected several NFL Franchise Tag stories from around the league:
Each day that goes by without Drew Brees signing a long-term contract with the Saints draws the franchise one day closer to having to use the franchise tag on the quarterback.
The franchise tag cost on quarterbacks is about $16 million. If the Saints and Brees agree to a deal somewhat like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady got, the Saints figure for this year they can get Brees' cap cost to about $14 million against the salary cap. That would give them a little extra room to try and keep Nicks and Colston.
Saints quarterback Drew Brees believes he'll have a new contract before free agency starts.
I am writing today using the premise that quarterback Drew Brees will be back with the New Orleans Saints next season armed with a new multi-year, mega-buck contract.
But if Waters does choose to hang 'em up, the Patriots should focus their attention on landing Nicks, a Nebraska product who was a fifth-round pick of the Saints in 2008.
The NFL has become a very pass-happy league over the past decade, and quarterbacks have taken advantage of the change in offensive philosophy.
Back on Feb. 2, Sporting News ran a story saying New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees expected to have a new contract in hand soon. Hasn't happened!
There are plenty of players that could receive the franchise tag this year, ranging from one of the league's best quarterbacks (Drew Brees) to a couple of kickers (Matt Prater and Josh Scobee).
This offseason is the first full one under the new collective bargaining agreement, which stipulates that a tagged player will no longer receive the average of the five highest-paid players at his position.
Teams have the option of placing the tag on one player set to hit free agency. It is a one year deal.
