The NFL Franchise Tag period begins this week. The New Orleans Saints have three potential players that could be tagged. Quarterback Drew Brees leads the list followed by Wide Receiver Marques Colston and Offensive Lineman Carl Nicks. Each day that goes by without Drew Brees signing a long-term contract with the Saints draws the franchise one day closer to having to use the franchise tag on the quarterback.

The franchise tag cost on quarterbacks is about $16 million. If the Saints and Brees agree to a deal somewhat like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady got, the Saints figure for this year they can get Brees' cap cost to about $14 million against the salary cap.
