Question:
I'm going to dig a pond on my property in Port Allen and I was told it is best to dig when the river is down. When is the Mississippi River at its lowest, or what time of the year we get the least rain?
Answer:
The Mississippi River is typically about at its lowest in mid/late fall (about now!). Autumn is also the driest time of year (nor most, but not all years) here in south Louisiana.
Now would be a good time to dig ... weather tends to cooperate for the next couple of weeks, drier weather is expected to stay in place for a while. And the river is down.
Why dig when the river is down? Because the water table is also down when the river is low ... you can dig deeper without hitting the saturated soil layer.
